Sam’s Bar & Restaurant – East Hampton, NY

Located on the crowded Newtown Lane in East Hampton, Sam’s seems to be more about dinner than anything else. Its dim interior looks more like an Irish Pub than a pizza restaurant. This makes it a good escape from the sun, the beach and the fabulousness that surrounds it. Perhaps this cave-like, otherworldly quality has kept Sam’s loyal following over the years.

A large pie ($17.50 for sixteen inches) at Sam’s is not as filling as many other pizzas, so order extra if you’re in doubt. The thin crust cracks when you fold it, but the pizza is more soft than crispy. The exception is at the lip, where the crust hardens to more of a cracker-like quality. There’s a thin layer of cheese that is nicely browned. The sauce is on the sweet side, and like too many places, there is not quite enough of it.

Sam’s is not about gourmet ingredients, just solid, family friendly pizza.
