Pizzeria Stella is located in the hip yet quiet Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia. Stella is part of celebrity chef Steven Starr’s stable of restaurants, which includes Buddakan and Morimoto. This is an upscale pizza restaurant in the DOC style, the kind which have been popping up all around the country. There aren’t too many like this in Philly, and we’re glad Stella is here.

The Margherita pies ($13) feature San Marzano tomatoes and hunks of mozzarella di bufala. The sauce is light and tangy. The cheese was slightly undercooked, but was otherwise smooth and milky. The soft crust is lightly charred, not too puffy, doesn’t flop over and has a hint of sourdough. Nice work! They also use shaved parmesan, though its flavor does get lost a little among all the other flavors. Stella also features a nice pizza bar so you can watch how it all gets made – ending with a drizzle of olive oil on top. Other toppings and menu items look like winners as well.

There is a lot to like about Stella’s pizza, making them one of the best in town.
