Café Pesto apparently began as a small take-out pizzeria in 1988. Today, Pesto has two casual restaurants on the Big Island featuring Hawaii Regional Cuisine and pizza of course. Locations are in Hilo and a little north of the luxurious Kohala resorts in the not very scenic port/industrial area of Kawaihea.

The pizzas here are baked in a ohia wood-burning oven and the style is coincidentally similar to the pies from Kona Brewing Co. Pub. The small is 9” and costs $8.95. Pesto’s thick, nicely risen crust is soft and tasty; browned on the outside although the bottom is lighter in color without any crisp. The amount of sauce is slightly more than enough but is quite good with nice herbs combined with the sweet, thick tomatoes. The best part of the pie for us is the superb taste of their cheese blend. The base is a soft mozzarella with a shredded romano blend baked in on top. Nicely done.

Friendly service with many pizzas choices and toppings to create your own pie makes Café Pesto a winning spot.
