Bubbies Bistro had been open three weeks by the time PizzaSnobo arrived. This kosher pizzeria, ice cream stand, and Mediterranean restaurant is a couple of blocks from the beach. They are still getting their systems in place, but the service is friendly and the owner is attentive to the customers.

When we first saw Bubbies it was a Saturday – Shabbat – and they were closed until sundown. From the look of it we assumed this was a slice joint, but as it turns out, Bubbies only does personal pies. The traditional cheese pie ($10.95) is called Maliziosa rather than Margherita. When we asked the guy behind the counter about the name, he said “beats me.” Oh well. On to the pizza. As it turns out, Bubbies’ pizza tastes better than it looks. When we first saw the 12 inch pie come out, we immediately thought of pizza you’d find at a bar, or a trendy bowling alley like Lucky Strike. Bubbies is better than that, but only by a small margin. There is an ample amount of sauce, made fresh and thick, but a little blander than we would have liked. This is Jersey tomato territory, after all. There is also plenty of cheese, but it was too gooey and devoid of any real mozzarella flavor. The crust is not your typical pizza style, but it is filling, sweet and soft with just a little bit of crunch. A little like pressed challah bread.

Kosher pizza need not be atrocious and Bubbies manages to be better than most. After all, we’re talking ingredients like flour, tomatoes and cheese. We only wish they’d start doing slices. Most people don’t want to sit around and kibbitz. They want to grab their food and get the flock to the beach.
