With locations in Adams Morgan next to Cashion’s, and in Arlington, Astor does both pizza and a Greek menu. The interior of the Adams Morgan spot is a bit dingy, but there are plenty of seats, which is a big advantage compared to the nearby jumbo slice joints. At Astor, you order at the counter and they make the pizza from scratch, so be prepared to wait a few minutes.

Like so many DC restaurants, what we got was fine, mediocre, more of the same, but this time with fennel. A small pie ($6.30) is oval and cut for sharing. The size is about the same as a typical jumbo slice, which generally costs $2 less. Astor piles on the cheese, also like many of the jumbo slice spots. We weren’t fans of the slightly sweet sauce, which had a canned flavor that made us want less of it rather than more. The crust is fairly light and puffy, possibly the best part – except it’s too spiced up. Fennel seeds or whatever it is, PizzaSnobo says, “please stop!” We also say “no” to sesame seeds for that matter.

Does Astor have good pizza? Any decent pizza is good pizza. And good pizza is a delicious food by definition. But we were hoping for better than that.
