You gotta love Arturo’s. It’s one of those timeless Greenwich Village spots. There are multiple rooms, including a front bar section with live music. It’s filled with locals and old timers, many of whom get on stage to belt out a few standards. The crowds are here late, but getting a seat quickly is rarely a problem. It’s a great place for groups. And they deliver.

It makes us laugh that you almost always have to wait just a couple of minutes too long for your pie ($16 for the small, $19 for large). When it does arrive, it’s just a little too charred. Arturo’s crust is thin and more chewy than crunchy. The cheese is better than most non-gourmet restaurants, and thanks to the turnover, you can bet what you’re eating is fresh. The sauce has the flavor of fresh tomatoes and is spread on top of the cheese in concentric circles. If only they used a little more sauce. Thankfully, this is easily remedied by ordering some extra on the side.

Along with their coal oven pizza, Arturo’s also has a full Southern Italian menu at good prices. If you must, head to the single bathroom, which boasts a bathtub, perhaps Arturo’s least appealing claim to fame.
