St. Marks 2 Bros Pizza – New York, NY

Multiple Locations

With multiple locations and expanding, 2 Bros charges $1 per slice (including tax) so it’s no wonder there is always a line. They have it right with the pricing. In fact, all pizza slices should cost $1 and the rest of the world economy should adjust itself from there.

Once upon a time there was a great pizzeria on Third Avenue and St. Marks Place called St. Marks Pizza. It was one of the best in NY – thick slices piled high with cheese and some of the best sauce around. There was always a line and it was a scene late at night, the pizzeria closed several years back, replaced by a hummus shop. Now 2 Bros bears the St. Marks name at the top of their logo, but that’s about where the similarities end.

Slices are on the small side – it is just a buck after all – but they have some heft. Unfortunately, the dough, which is soft and chewy, has little taste and the layer of cheese seems to be melted right into it. The sauce is what kills it though, even closer to ketchup than Ben’s on MacDougal Street. Good thing they don’t ladle on too much. The pizza is also placed in display cases on the counter, which is always a warning sign.

2 Bros is what it is and makes you remember that a few short years ago, pizza was priced right.
