South Brooklyn Pizza has expanded out of Queens and into the East Village of Manhattan on First Avenue, just below St. Marks Place. The Manhattan location is inviting with dark wood throughout, like a country kitchen. But it’s small and there are no seats, so while it might be great for a family meal, if you want to sit down you have to order it in.

The slices are expensive at $4, but this is gourmet pizza and should not be missed. The rich red sauce seems to burst from the vine. Along with quality mozzarella, South Brooklyn also melts parmesan cheese onto their slices and adds bits of fresh basil – a margherita slice that takes NY Style to a higher level along the lines of Di Fara and Artichoke. The crust is crispy throughout, not too thick and charred just right.

There are other pizza choices along St. Marks Place, but you won’t go wrong at South Brooklyn.
