The local who sat next to us on the plane claimed Shaka to be the best pizza on Maui. Several newspapers and guides have also given Shaka high marks over the years (we couldn’t help but laugh when we read, “best pizza west of the Hudson”). Many places on Maui serve pies only, so it was nice to see a NY style slice ($2.59) on the menu. Shaka has a counter where you can down a quick slice, plus plenty of tables and an open-air patio. However, the moment we saw the slice going into a large spinning oven we became skeptical.

The slice is small compared to your average NY slice. The crust is thin and has  an extra large, off balanced outer crust. When we picked up our slice, it started tearing away from the outer crust, which tastes very bland and overly chewy. The rest of the pizza is fair. The cheese is a little greasy but similar to what you might find in NY. The sauce is fine but nothing like the best of the best.

We have eaten worse pizza, but if Shaka were in the Big Apple it would be below average.
