Located in NYU territory, a quieter part of town than you might imagine, Pizza Mercato has been serving slices with a little cornmeal for over a decade. (They also have a location on East 34th Street near Lexington.) At one point, Mercato had a big sign that said “Official Pizza of the Italian Embassy.” Maybe so, because this fluffy pizza is not quite NY Style.
Slices ($2.50) can be a little oily and the sauce tasted canned, then doctored up with oregano. This is pretty dry pizza, but there aren’t many places nearby to choose from. And the 2-Slice + Drink special keeps the business
rolling. Heroes and Sicilian slices also lean to the disappointing side.
Pizza Mercado is pizza to have for convenience. If you’re downtown, take the three minute walk to Two Boots near Bleecker and Broadway instead.
