Pizza Mart – Washington, DC

Pizza Mart is one of the jumbo slice hole-in-the-walls that are ubiquitous in Washington, DC. Located in Adams Morgan, Pizza Mart does its best business on weekend nights when party people stumble out of the bars looking for something to absorb the alcohol. Small and dingy, the decor seems to reflect the tiredness of its late night patrons. But looks aside, the pizza was actually tastier than we expected and better than its neighbor / competitor Boli’s.

Slices at Pizza Mart ($5) are huge and could feed two people – not that anyone is sharing. The cheese is slightly browned and not too oily. The crust is soft, but a little annoying to chew and falls into the cardboard variety. The sauce was barely average and tasted too much like tomato paste. But at Pizza Mart and the other jumbo spots in DC, quality is not the point.

Pizza Mart boasts that it has been featured on the Travel Channel. Maybe so, but that doesn’t mean it’s a place to bring the family any time soon.
