Colosseo Pizzeria is located on the corner of Spring Garden and 15th Street in Philadelphia. They have a big sign out front promoting their brick oven, which might make some think this is an upscale joint that only serves personal pies. Not so. At Colosseo, you can get slices and other Italian fare in a casual and relaxed setting.

Slices at Colosseo cost an odd $2.27 – that whole tax thing that spots outside of NYC often feel compelled to do. Just build the tax into the cost and round up or down to $2.25 or $2.30! Pet peeves aside, Colosseo serves very good pizza. The dough is on the softer, heavier side and there is also plenty of cheese that uses a better grade of mozzarella than the multitudes of competitors out there. In fact, we’ll give Colosseo a great compliment – they reminded us of NYC spots like Stromboli during it’s better days, as well as St. Marks Pizza, which we’ve talked about before but unfortunately has been gone for many years now. The sauce was plentiful and very smooth – no chunks at all. The pie we had was straight out of the oven, but it had some issues with the cheese sticking to the plate as well as sliding off the pizza. But a little sloppiness certainly did not hurt the flavor.

The service and Colosseo was also friendly and they played 80s hits like Ghostbusters and Madonna’s Borderline.
