Famous Ben’s Pizzeria – New York, NY

While it has become harder and harder to find good pizza in New York City over the years, Famous Ben’s in SoHo remains a solid place for a classic slice. Usually crowded, partially because there are few other choices close by, Ben’s somewhat dingy interior is good for a quick stopover.

Slices ($2.75) are of the sort you used to be able to find all over New York, before delis started installing pizza ovens and rents went up even faster than the price of bufala mozzarella and San Marzano tomatoes. There is more heft to a Ben’s slice than you might think by looking at it. And less crunch. The crust is soft and a little too soggy, but the cheese is nicely browned, adding to the flavor. The sauce didn’t jump out and was just a little better than average.

Chew slowly and you just might taste the fabled New York City water.
