It’s not famous like John’s, but we like this brick oven pizzeria just fine. They do slices at a front counter in addition to a full service Italian restaurant, something you don’t see enough of in NYC. Bella Vita helps make Times Square and the Theater District a little more bearable. There is also a second location at 158 West 58th Street, near Carnegie Deli, 212-664-7670 .

A regular slice ($2.75) has a sweet sauce with a thin layer of fresh mozzarella across the top and bits of basil baked in. A gourmet slice for a good price. The dough is soft and does flop over a too easily, so there’s not much crunch. Yet overall, Bella Vita’s pizza comes together as a winning team.

It’s one of the few pizza restaurants in Manhattan that also serves slices. Grab something to go, or sit down with the whole family. You don’t even have to eat pizza. Just keep your eye on their Department of Health rating. Hopefully, the Times Square location will have things cleaned up by the next inspection.

Department of Health Rating: C (43rd St.); B (58th St.)
