Mariella Pizza – New York, NY

Multiple locations

It’s time for Mariella to update their website because it only lists one location. There are actually several: on 3rd Avenue and 16th Street; on the Upper East Side; and in the Theater District on 8th Avenue and 56th Street. As people who live in these neighborhoods know, Mariella is a solid pizzeria.

Slices ($2.50) are on the larger slide and are classic, saucy NY style. There’s plenty of gooey cheese and the crust has a favorable amount of crunch and comes slightly charred on the bottom. We also liked the tangy sauce. In this case, we don’t even care if it came from a can. (Rumor has it that even Di Fara uses canned sauce in their recipe.)

It’s not worth travelling to, but if you find yourself near one of these spots, you can do far worse. In fact, in most parts of the country, Mariella would likely be the best pizzeria in town. Plus they make one of the better chicken parmesan heroes around – as always, ask for extra sauce.
